In school, we’ve been taught to fit in...follow the syllabus...not asking enough questions...criticizing teachers...not learning outside the textbook.
We follow that same process at our jobs as well. Keeping our heads down and only doing what’s been told...not taking enough initiatives, criticizing our managers, meeting the specs, trying to fin in even if we know we can stand out.
People argue that it’s the fault of the company who pushes the employees to fit in. I think, company matters but if you’ve decided to fit-in then you already lost the battle. No matter how good or bad the company is.
The stories we like to listen again and again are of those people who choose to stand out when the world wants them to fit in.
Fitting in is a choice. So is standing out. What did you choose?
